What Does Immediate Jeopardy Mean to a Nursing Care Facility?

A nursing care facility is meant to provide long-term care to patients of all ages but mostly serve the elderly. These facilities are held to high standards to make sure they are providing the right level of care for their patients. When a facility is given an Immediate Jeopardy rating, this means the facility is considered a danger to its occupants and must quickly take measures to make sure the facility is in full compliance with the law.

What Does This Rating Mean?

The definition of this rating is a situation where the facility has been found non-compliant in with more than one requirement of participation and is likely to cause serious injuries, harm, impairment, or even the death of a resident. This rating means something has already happened in the facility and must be corrected right away or it could end up being shut down.

If the facility does not act quickly to resolve the non-compliance issues, CMS can take away the facility's Medicare and Medicaid funding, which can be devastating to the facility and make it end up being forced to close down because it cannot afford to operate any longer.

Facilities that have been given an IF rating can also lose accreditation and their certification. It is imperative facilities work with CMS to make sure they are taking care of all non-compliance issues so they can be sure their facility is operating at the protective level it should.

What Causes an IF Rating?

There are many issues that can result in an IF rating. There are several issues that more commonly occur than others, including the following.

Failure to maintain a fire safe environment for residents and staff.

Failure to protect patients from abuse and neglect.

Failure to properly monitor patients.

Failure to provide registered nurse supervision of care.

AANAC is committed to providing nursing professionals and facilities with the tools and information they need, so their facility can provide the highest level of care for patients. IF ratings are serious and should not be ignored. Waiting too long to take care of these issues can have negative repercussions on a facility.
